TN BJP calls DMK on Catchatheeevu ‘Betrayal’, CM Stalin demands public apology

Chennai, October 4 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a faster attack on Chief Minister MK Stalin and Dravida Munnetra Kajgam (DMK), who accuses them of historic betrayal for Kachhethevu Island in 1974.

In a strong word statement, BJP state spokesperson Ans Prasad said that CM Stalin blamed the Central Government for the difficulties of the Sangh, “deliberately” ignoring DMK’s role in “Self -dedication” to Tamil interests.

“The people of Tamil Nadu, especially coastal fishing community, deserve honesty and revaluation, not selective outrage,” Prasad said.

Under an agreement in 1974, the 285 -acre uninhabited island Kachthevu was quoted to Sri Lanka by the Congress -led Center in Pock Strait by the Congress -led Center.

The BJP alleged that this process ignored the Parliament, ignoring the constitutional provisions to change the national borders.

At that time, DMK founder and then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, despite being briefed by the Ministry of External Affairs, “fail” to oppose this move beyond a token assembly resolution.

“It was not ignorance; it was a political hurry,” Prasad said, citing the delicated government records, who showed that the DMK leadership knew about the results, but kept quiet to preserve its alliance with the Congress.

The BJP also accused the DMK of being “failed” when it shared power with the Congress -led UPA between 2004 and 2014, which was a period marked by the Sri Lankan authorities with the frequent arrest of Tamil fishermen.

Prasad alleged, “More than a thousand fishermen were kept in custody annually, yet there was no diplomat pushback from DMK ministers.”

On the contrary, the BJP highlighted its own stance, remembering that the then Jan Sangh leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee had opposed the agreement to capture Kachathevu for Sri Lanka in Parliament in 1974.

Since coming to power, the BJP -led NDA government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to the party, secured the release and repatriation of more than 5,000 fishermen, including the death row.

Prasad said that CM Stalin’s coalition with the Congress reduced its credibility to question the Center and demanded that the Chief Minister “publicly apologize to the fishing community for decades of betrayal”.

He said that only diplomatic efforts under the Modi government can only restore the rights of Tamil fishermen and protect India’s maritime interests.
