TMC leader Mahua Moitra to appear before ED in FEMA case

Trinamool Congress leader and former Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra was summoned for questioning by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday (February 19) in a Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violation case.

The 49-year-old politician was asked to testify at the central agency office in Delhi today and her statement will be recorded under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999, sources said.

The TMC leader, who was expelled from the Lok Sabha in December last year, is also being probed by India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is conducting a preliminary probe into the allegations against Moitra based on a Lok Sabha reference.

Allegations against Mahua Moitra

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey accused Moitra of asking a question in the Lok Sabha at the behest of businessman Darshan Hiranandani, targeting the Adani Group and Prime Minister Naren Narendra Modi in exchange for gifts.

He also accused Moitra of compromising national security for financial gain. On December 8, 2023, Moitra was expelled from the Lok Sabha over the issue.

Moitra denies any wrongdoing and claims he was targeted for raising questions about Adani Group’s dealings.

“The Lok Pal has not uploaded any referral order on the website under the Lokpal Act and the CBI has not released any official information. “Sources” told reporters as per the usual media circus. Hopefully before I go on a witch hunt, the Rs 13,000-crore The Adani coal scam deserves CBI PE,” Moitra said on X in November.
