Nainital, Nov 23 (IANS) Three teachers, including the president of the Government Teachers Association of Haldwani block, died after their car went out of control and fell about 60 meters into the Shipra river in the Ratighat area on the Almora-Haldwani highway in Uttarakhand’s Nainital district. Police gave this information on Sunday.
Officials said that an injured teacher who survived the accident was given first aid at CHC Khairna before being referred to Haldwani in a critical condition.
According to the police, on Saturday, four teachers, including 50-year-old Sanjay Singh Bisht and Manoj Kumar, block president of the Government Teachers Association in Haldwani in Almora district, were going by car to attend a wedding ceremony.
The accident occurred around 7 pm on Saturday evening when the vehicle lost balance near Ratighat and fell about 60 meters into the river.
A child who witnessed the accident informed Ratighat resident Tara Singh Bisht, who immediately alerted others. Officials said that Tara Singh and BJP Mandal President Neeraj Bisht reached the spot first.
After receiving the information, police team and SDRF personnel reached the spot. Rescue workers, along with local residents, rescued Sanjay and Manoj from the damaged vehicle and took both of them to Garampani CHC.
Sanjay died during treatment, while Manoj was referred to Haldwani for further treatment.
Two other teachers, Surendra Bhandari and Pushkar Bhainsoda, remained trapped inside the vehicle and were declared dead at the scene.
Due to such a strong fall, the car was completely shattered after falling from a great height into the river bed.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem and their families have been informed.
Police are investigating further. More information is awaited.
