Hyderabad, October 10 (IANS) Three senior leaders of the banned CPI-Maoist surrendered before the Telangana Police here on Friday.
Three State Committee Members (SCMs) of the organisation, who spent 21 to 35 years underground, accused Director General of Police (DGP) B. Layed down their arms in front of Shivdhar Reddy.
Kunakathi Venkataiah, 52, state committee member and secretary/in-charge of South Bastar DVC without Dandikarai Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC, Mogilicherla Venkataraju, CP-Maoist) and Thodam Ganga, 42, state committee member, member in Janatha Sarkar of DSKZC and in-charge of Janatha Sarkar, South Bastar DVC, decided to join. National mainstream.
Venkataiah and Venkataraju, from Siddipar and Hanumakonda districts of Telangana, spent 35 years underground, while Ganga, a native of Chhattisgarh’s Sukuma district, was active in the organization for 21 years.
The reasons for his surrender also included differences within the CPI-Maoist and health. Venkataiah said that discussions were going on in the CPI-Maoist for some time to bring about changes in line with the changing socio-political and economic realities.
There was a cash reward of Rs 20 lakh each on the three Maoist leaders. The police chief handed him the money in the form of a demand draft. Besides this, they will receive additional benefits as per the rehabilitation policy of the Telangana Government for surrendered cadres.
The DGP assured that all the benefits under the rehabilitation policy will be provided to them immediately, so that they can rebuild their lives with dignity and security.
He claimed that the return of Maoist leaders to the mainstream after so many years of underground life is a moral victory of the holistic and comprehensive policy adopted by the Telangana Police against CPI-Maoist.
He said Venkataraju’s decision reflected growing discontent over leadership, ideological differences between committees and structures and internal conflicts within the CPI-Maoist.
Shivadhar Reddy said that, inspired by the holistic and comprehensive strategy of Telangana Police, 412 underground cadres have surrendered before the state police so far in 2025. These include one Central Committee Member (CCM), four State Committee Members, two Divisional Committee Secretaries (DVCS), eight Divisional Committee Members (DVCMs), and 35 Area Committee Members (ACMs).
The DGP said that a total of 72 underground cadres of CPI-Maoist are natives of Telangana. Of the 12 central committee members of CPI-Maoist, eight are from Telangana.
The Telangana Police Chief appealed to all underground Maoist cadres native to Telangana to come back to their native villages by joining the mainstream and participate in the advancement of Telangana State through constructive participation.
He said, “If the underground Maoists return to their native places and join the mainstream, the Telangana government will extend all benefits, including immediate relief with appropriate amount and other support measures and systems under its rehabilitation schemes to lead a free and dignified life.”
He assured that the Telangana Police Department will always endeavor to ensure that the Maoists joining the mainstream are provided all the benefits they receive from the government to aid their livelihood and rehabilitation.
