Philadelphia:
Philadelphia police said three people were injured in a shooting between rival groups during celebrations to mark the end of Ramadan.
Police gave no indication that the event itself was the target of an Eid al-Fitr gathering celebrating the end of the Muslim holy month.
“We’re very, very lucky today that no more people were shot, no one was killed,” Police Chief Kevin Bethel told reporters.
About 30 shots were fired around mid-afternoon, as about 1,000 people were celebrating the end of a month-long fast in the park, Besser said.
“What we do know is that there appear to be two factions within the park and they are currently exchanging gunfire,” Besser said.
Three people were injured, including an armed 15-year-old who was shot by police. He was hit in the arms and legs.
Five people, including the teen, were arrested and five guns were recovered, police said.
“Eid al-Fitr should always be a time of joy for our Muslim neighbors. I am saddened by every member of Philadelphia’s Muslim community whose celebrations were marred by gun violence today,” said Pennsylvania Governor Josh Summer Pirro wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
