three hiker has been found dead in the south californiaincluding a 19-year-old who fell 500 feet from the Devil’s Backbone Trail in Bald Mountain, police explain.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call to find the teenage hiker around 11:30 a.m. local time on Monday.
When the hiker fell hundreds of feet, his friend moved to an area with cell service to seek help, providing rescuers with GPS coordinates.
The Sheriff’s Department dispatched ground rescue crews and began an aerial search. Rescuers in a helicopter found the hiker and two others nearby. However, due to strong winds, they were unable to complete the rescue safely.
Later that night, a medic from a Los Angeles County airship descended on the trio and confirmed that all three were dead. Due to weather conditions, the helicopter was still unable to complete the rescue.
As of Tuesday morning, recovery efforts were still ongoing. The identity of the hiker has not been revealed.

Mt Baldy Ski Lifts Inc. describes the Devil’s Backbone Trail as a “spine-chilling hike.” It stretches 6.6 miles out and back, with an elevation change of 2,350 feet.
According to the company’s “Mountain Report” on Tuesday, the summit was “breezy and cold.” Wind chill values dropped to around 25 degrees early Tuesday morning, with northeast winds expected to be 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph.
