Chandigarh, October 31 (IANS) Punjab Police has arrested three activists of the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) for writing pro-Khalistan slogans on the walls of schools in Punjab. Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Friday.
The New York-based SFJ is backed by mastermind Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a dual US-Canadian citizen who has been designated a terrorist by the Indian government. The arrested have been identified as Navjot Singh alias Jota (24) and Gurpreet Singh (26), both residents of Kaliyawala village in Firozpur; And Harjinder Singh, resident of Mananwala, Bathinda.
Police have also recovered four mobile phones and a dongle device from their possession.
According to the information, on the night of 19 and 20 October, pro-Khalistan slogans were found written on the walls of two schools including a school in Mananwala village.
DGP Yadav said preliminary investigation revealed that the arrested accused had written inflammatory slogans with the aim of inciting public unrest and promoting anti-national sentiments.
“Evidence indicates that they were receiving foreign funding for these illegal activities,” he said.
The police acted swiftly and ensured that no anti-national activity went unchecked, the DGP said, adding that Bathinda and Counter Intelligence of Bathinda Police jointly conducted the investigation in a professional and scientific manner to bring the culprits to justice.
Sharing operational details, Senior Superintendent of Police (Bathinda) Amneet Kondal said that following technical leads, police teams managed to nab two accused – Navjot and Gurpreet Singh, who are the main accused of writing the slogan at PM Kendriya Vidyalaya in Bhisiana village.
He said that after further investigation, the police teams have also arrested the accused Harjinder Singh, who had written the slogans on the wall of a school in Mananwala village.
The SSP said that during interrogation, the accused revealed that they had written the slogans on the walls following the instructions of Pannun’s close associate Pawanpreet Singh alias Deep Chahal in exchange for money.
Sharing more details, Assistant Inspector General Avneet Kaur Sidhu said that accused Harjinder has revealed that accused Navjot had introduced him to Pawanpreet Singh alias Deep Chahal, who instructed him to write a slogan for which he was paid Rs 2,000.
