Kolkata: Three Afghan nationals living in Kolkata for some time with fake Indian identity documents have been arrested, the city police said on Friday.
Based on a complaint filed by the security control organisation, police on Thursday arrested three Afghan nationals identified as Jalat Khan, Abdullah Khan and Saheb Khan, a city police official said.
All of them were produced before a lower court in Kolkata on Thursday and the court sent them to police custody till November 6.
It is learned that all three had come to Kolkata some time ago with valid Indian visas. But he did not go back to Afghanistan after his visa to stay in India expired. “Instead, they arranged for them to have fake Indian identity documents like Aadhaar card, EPIC card and PAN card. All three of them came to Kolkata at different times, with Jalat Khan being the latest to arrive in the city in 2019,” a city police officer said.
The police are currently interrogating all three to get information from them as to why they were forced to stay in Kolkata even after the expiry of their visa terms. The investigating officers are also trying to find out from him the people who had arranged for fake Indian identity documents for him.
Earlier this year, Enforcement Directorate (ED) sleuths had arrested Azad Malik, a Pakistani national, from a rented accommodation on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. Mullick, who was originally a Pakistani citizen, first obtained fake Bangladeshi identity documents to acquire a Bangladeshi identity. He then used forged Indian documents to become an Indian citizen, after which he started running hawala operations and fake passport racket from his rented accommodation in Kolkata.
Earlier this month, ED officials had also arrested Mullick’s close associate Indu Bhushan Halder, who was one of the key technical operators in the fake passport syndicate. ED officials are trying to trace the whereabouts of seven suspected Pakistani nationals who allegedly obtained fake Indian passports through the same racket.
