Thousands take part in pro-Palestinian march in London, 12 arrested

Pro-Palestinian marches become regular event in London

London:

As tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters marched through London on Saturday, police arrested 12 people on charges including inciting racial hatred and attacking emergency workers.

Demonstrators gathered in Park Lane in the center of the British capital, holding banners reading “Ceasefire now” while chanting “Free Palestine”.

“People are very, very worried that the disaster that has happened in Rafah will happen again,” John Rees of the Stop the War coalition told AFP.

“I hope we can avoid perpetuating this tragedy.”

London’s Metropolitan Police said 12 people had been arrested, including two for posting anti-Semitic placards.

“A man was seen in the crowd holding an anti-Semitic placard. When police moved in to arrest him, they were beaten, resulting in six arrests,” the force posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Two others were arrested for refusing to remove their face coverings when required, and another was arrested for allegedly supporting a banned organization linked to the placards.

Marches in support of Palestine have become a regular Saturday event in London since Israel launched a military response to an unprecedented attack by Hamas on October 7.

The attack killed about 1,160 people in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official Israeli figures.

According to Israeli data, militants have also taken about 250 people hostage, 130 of whom are still in Gaza, and 30 of them are presumed dead.

Israel’s retaliatory attacks in Gaza have killed at least 28,858 people, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.
