In Minneapolis, protests swelled into thousands and at least 29 people were arrested Friday night after some people vandalized the hotel and threw ice cubes at police. Law enforcement deployed pepper balls at a group of protesters Saturday after a small group began throwing snowballs at vehicles.
Ahead of planned weekend protests, officials including Frey reminded demonstrators of their First Amendment rights to peacefully exercise and not to give in to agitators.
“This is what Donald Trump wants,” Frey said of protesters engaging in illegal behavior. “He wants us to take the bait.”
Frey and other lawmakers claimed that the presence of federal law enforcement officers in the city heightened tensions and led to more violence. They asked Trump to remove ICE officials and allow local law enforcement to keep communities safe.
