tottenham head coach Thomas Frank He paid tribute to “extraordinary” Guglielmo Vicario after the one-sided goalless draw in Monaco and admitted his team are still “learning” how to play. Champions League soccer.

Injury-hit Spurs were far from their best at the Stade Louis II and needed to stop goalkeeper Vicario from being in top form. Folarin Balogun Earlier on three occasions he had brilliantly blocked Thilo Kehrer’s close-range header in the second half.

Vicario faced criticism after Sunday’s defeat Aston VillaWhile his status was in question thanks to Morgan Rodgers’ leveller, he almost single-handedly ensured Tottenham reached five points from three European fixtures this season.

“I think the two goals against Villa, I don’t think it’s mistakes. I don’t think it’s any of that. It was two great finishes,” Frank responded.

“What I will say is, I think he was very good today. I think some of the saves were exceptional. He’s a big part of why we got a hard-fought point, but at the end of the day, it might have been an important point.”

The away fans congratulated at full-time as Spurs produced another disjointed display in attack.

Brennan Johnson’s late shot was blocked by Christian Mavisa and Micky van de Veen and Kevin Denso both created chances in the first half after the Franks elected to send out £52million playmaker Xavi Simmons.

The 0-0 draw was Tottenham’s first in 125 matches since their last Champions League campaign in the 2022–23 season, when they were eliminated from the competition after a stalemate with AC Milan on March 8, 2023.

Frank said: “It was a game (in which) it was relatively even in the first half and then in the second half, where I think Monaco was better than us, where we did not perform the way we wanted to.

“I think overall in the game we lacked a bit of intensity, especially in the second half and combined with the day where we didn’t get a lot of players at a good level – that can happen.

“I think we are learning the Champions League and every game in the Champions League is difficult, especially an away game against a good Monaco team.

“A Monaco team who I also think it would be fair to say had their best performance of the season against us.

“Fair play for them and then the ability for us to compete Premier League And then in the Champions League it is a challenge that we are ready for and want.

“It’s fair to say, last year we finished 17th and competed in the Europa League, so we’re taking it step by step. And getting a point and a clean sheet on a bad day isn’t the worst thing.”

Monaco’s new boss Sebastian Pocognoli had become frustrated with Vicario’s performances and time-wasting tactics.

“Vicario was excellent, he made some great saves. He wasted a lot of time between each free-kick, long kicks too,” Pocognoli said, smiling.

“He played a good game, but I think it was also because we were strong in creating chances. He had a good performance. Man of the match.”
