Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national general secretary Tarun Chugh attacked his decision to provide 15 percent reservation to Muslims in housing schemes in the Karnataka government on Friday, called it “unconstitutional and illegal” and accused the ruling Congress party of being involved in disgrace politics.
Speaking to media reporters, Chugh said, “This is unconstitutional and illegal because in the Constitution of India, Dr. Bribedkar clearly wrote that no one can get reservation on the basis of religion.”
He alleged that the decision was made completely to consolidate the Congress vote bank and came at the cost of the marginalized communities.
“The decision of the Government of Karnataka clearly snatches away the rights of SCS, STS, OBC and Hindus. The Congress is only looking at its vote bank – that is why they are taking such unconstitutional decisions … We will not let this happen.”
On Thursday, Chugh’s comments come amid the increasing criticism of BJP leaders on the approval of the Karnataka cabinet to increase reservation quota for minority communities for minority communities under various housing schemes.
This decision has started a political uproar, the BJP argued that religion-based reservation violates constitutional principles.
Karnataka BJP President Vijayendra Yeddyurappa also condemned the decision, called it “a dangerous attempt to institutionalize communal vote-bank politics”.
In a post on X, Yeddyurappa accused the Congress government of welfare of vote-bank politics and claimed that the new reservation policy deprives SCS, STS and OBC of their right opportunities.
“Reservation on the basis of religion is unconstitutional! In Karnataka, @Inckarnataka has converted welfare for vote-bank politics into a market. • Earlier, 4% quota in government contracts.
Now, 15% quota in housing schemes. Where does this appeasement end? This is a dangerous attempt to institutionalize communal vote-bank politics. It not only robs the SCS, STS and OBC of their right opportunities, but also sends a disturbing message that merit, backwardness and constitutional principles are secondary to religious appeasement, ”he wrote.
Yeddyurappa said, “I urge the Congress to choose the constitution that they like to wave in public meetings. Do they read it even once, they will know that reservation is based on social and educational backwardness, and not assigned on the basis of” voting for me “. Under the guise of welfare, this government is carrying forward reservation, this government is carrying on the strength of the constitution of Dr. And appeasement is pulling its vision through the dirt of politics.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi called the move unconstitutional by mentioning the ‘rejection’ of the religion-based reservation of the Supreme Court.
In addition, replying to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s recent comments, Chugh said that the Grand Old Party had become “directionless” and was now working under the influence of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). (AI)
