Ford recently filed a patent for a deployable screen door, which aims to enhance the off-road experience for drivers. Originally submitted in October 2020, shortly after the Bronco debuted with its removable doors, the patent shows a network of screens that can deploy automatically or by driver command.

While the vehicle shown in the patent images is different from the Bronco currently sold, the technology only extends beyond the door. Motors facilitate the movement of the screen, which can also cover a removable roof panel, although the choice of this remains unclear in clear skies.

These screens provide additional protection, especially for passengers who are concerned about falling out, and Ford suggests wider safety implications. Electric motors enable the extension and retraction of the screen, a pyrotechnic device activates them in the event of an impact, provided sensors confirm any obstacles. However, the effectiveness of such rapid deployment remains uncertain.

In addition to the deployable screen door, Ford recently expanded its portfolio of patents to include other innovations in the field of autonomous vehicles, including swiveling seats. The patent showcases a sophisticated system of overhead and knee airbags carefully designed to meet the unique requirements of autonomous vehicles equipped with swivel seats.

These airbags are cleverly designed to be deployed on the top and side of the seat, providing comprehensive protection for the upper body and lower limbs of the passengers.

Ford’s pursuit of safety innovation is further demonstrated by the introduction of its rear inflatable seatbelt airbags, which were previously integrated into Spanish-made Ford Mondeo models from 2016 to 2020. These special airbags inflate for about six seconds during protection. Incidents such as vehicle roll-overs, simultaneously tighten seatbelts to reduce the risk of head injury.
