Ultramarathoner Russ Cook, also known as “The Hardest Old Man,” is about to accomplish an extraordinary feat: run across Africa. The ambitious journey, dubbed Project Africa, will make him the first person to complete such a trek. Cook began his adventure on April 22, 2023 at the southern tip of South Africa and is expected to reach the finish line in Bizerte, Tunisia on April 7. Project Africa is an epic undertaking spanning nearly 9,000 miles across 16 African countries.
Yesterday, he posted on Twitter that he was about to complete a transcontinental marathon in about five days.
“5 days to go. The past 347 days traveling across Africa have been without a doubt the hardest days of my life, but also a huge honour,” he wrote on Twitter.
5 days left.
The past 347 days traveling across Africa have been undoubtedly the most difficult days of my life, but also a great privilege.
We met incredible people in every country we visited who welcomed us with love and kindness. The human spirit is a beautiful thing… pic.twitter.com/bss7yU3FRl

according to British Broadcasting CorporationMr Cook originally planned to complete 360 marathons in 240 days. After navigating complications including visas, health scares, geopolitical issues and armed robberies, he was forced to change course and extend the challenge.
Cook’s passion for ultra running was sparked by a friend. Since then, he’s taken on challenges such as running across Asia and even participating in a beer marathon. The Africa project is not just about distance; Cook also raises money for charity. The challenge is in aid of running charities and has raised £4,27,000 (Rs 4,47,62,324) so far.
Despite facing visa issues, health issues, and even a robbery, Cook’s resolve did not waver. His journey takes him through deserts, rainforests and mountains, pushing him to his limits. Awaiting him at the finish line was a celebration party featuring a performance by British punk band Soft Play. This is an ultramarathon that will be remembered.
