world’s most beautiful railway station Revealed in 2025, Europe dominates this list.
The list is compiled by Prix Versailles, an organization that hosts a series of architectural competitionsWhich are announced every year UNESCO Headquarters.
All seven stations included in the list were chosen because of their notable architectural ambition.
France and Saudi Arabia were given the most awards, with two stations each, while entries from Australia, Belgium and China were also praised.
Saint-Denis Pleyel station in France made the list because of its wooden courtyard decorated with Palaeolithic-inspired sculptures.
France’s other winner, Gustave Roussy station in Villejuif, was recognized for its open pedestrian pavilion with a large glass roof. The Prix Versailles said it “blurs the line between interior and exterior”. The use of smooth, forged, perforated and polished metal was also noted as an impressive feature.
Qafed Station in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was chosen for its facade which simulates the patterns created by desert winds in the sand.
Another station in the city, Qasr Al Hokam, was celebrated for its glass roof topped by an inverted conical canopy. There is also an underground garden inside the station.
In Sydney, Gadigal Station was praised by awards for its interior artworks, each of which was inspired by early railway tunnels and made of dark ceramic tiles.
On the other side of the world, Mons station in Belgium, the third European location on the list, was honored for its white, steel, cathedral-like walkway, which measures 165 meters in length.
The last entry on the list was Baiyun Station in Guangzhou, China. It was chosen for its “ethereal” curved structure, which allows natural light to enter the atrium.
In a statement, Jérôme Gaudain, Secretary General of the Prix Versailles, explained why it is important to recognize the architecture of the stations.
He said, “Excellence lends itself to recognition and humility, and is an essential virtue in this day and age, when the harmony manifested in these new passenger stations needs to be extended across entire continents.”
“Already part of the legacy of this century, this infrastructure is reviving the role that we as a society ascribe to mobility. At each site, beauty is given concrete form, like a lung breathing new life into the city, a shared symbolic area at the service of its inhabitants.”
Every year, members of the Prix Versailles world jury assess the architecture of railway stations, airports, hotels and museums.
