After days of wrangling, ruling ally BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena have decided to contest municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Thane, in an alliance, Sena sources claimed on Tuesday (December 9).

Sources said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Shinde decided in a late night meeting on Monday (December 8) that the ruling party will contest these elections as members of the existing Mahayuti alliance.

The dates of municipal elections are yet to be announced.

He said that in the meeting held in Nagpur, where the winter session of the state legislature is going on, in the presence of BJP leaders Chandrashekhar Bawankule and Ravindra Chavan, it was also agreed that BJP and Shiv Sena will not buy each other’s leaders and workers.

A Shiv Sena leader said, “There was a positive discussion between the leaders of both the parties about fighting the municipal elections together as a grand alliance in entire Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Thane.”

Another leader said, discussions on seat sharing will start at the local level in the next two-three days.

In a separate meeting on Monday (December 8), Shinde told his party MLAs and ministers that Mahayuti will fight unitedly in the municipal corporation and district council elections. Sources said he advised him to follow “coalition dharma” and refrain from making any statement or doing anything that could lead to conflict within the grand alliance of BJP, Sena and NCP.

Mahayuti’s allies are contesting against each other in many places in the first phase of local body elections. In some cases, the campaign turned acrimonious, leading Shinde to raise the issue with the top BJP leadership.
