The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives will send two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the Senate on April 10, House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Thursday.
Mayorkas, who Republicans blame for a record surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, was narrowly impeached by the House of Representatives last month on charges that he failed to enforce U.S. immigration laws and made false statements to Congress.
Mayorkas, a member of Democratic President Joe Biden’s cabinet, said he took no responsibility for the situation at the border, instead blaming it on a broken U.S. immigration system that Congress has failed to fix.
“We will deliver the formally adopted articles of impeachment to you when the Senate returns on April 10, 2024,” Johnson and 11 Republican impeachment managers told Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in a letter Thursday.
The House and Senate are currently on recess for two weeks.
“We urge you to schedule a trial in this matter as soon as possible,” they wrote.
Federal officials impeached by the House, including the president, will face trials in the Senate to determine whether they should be removed from office.
A statement from Schumer’s office said senators would be sworn in as jurors for the trial the day after the article was published.
However, it is highly unlikely that the Democratic-led House of Representatives would vote to remove Mayorkas.
After the initial vote failed, the House held two votes and ultimately voted 214 to 213 to impeach Mayorkas. Democrats and a handful of Republicans opposed the action.
