The ship that caused the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge earlier Tuesday was also involved in an incident in the Belgian port of Antwerp in 2016.
The Antwerp Port Authority said that on July 11, 2016, the container ship “Dali” crashed into the North Sea Container Terminal while trying to leave.
The port authority could not reveal details about the cause of the accident but said the ship had been at the dock for some time after the accident for repairs.
A spokesman for the Port of Antwerp told Reuters: “Generally, these incidents are investigated and the ship is only allowed to leave after experts have determined that the ship is safe.”
Belgium’s Maritime Commission, which investigates such incidents, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The 948-foot-long MS Dali, owned by Grace Ocean Pte Ltd and managed by Synergy Marine Corp, collided with a pillar of the Baltimore Bridge on Tuesday.
Danish company Maersk said in a statement that the ship was chartered by Maersk Line at the time of the accident.
Maersk said it could not comment on the incident in Antwerp.
