After a winter of awards shows — the Emmys, the Golden Globes, the Grammys — the granddaddy of them all, the Academy Awards, is almost here. The 96th Academy Awards may be the coronation for “Oppenheimer,” which leads the pack with 13 nominations, but other films like “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things” are also in the running.

Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s show:

When are the Oscars held?

The Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. ET – an hour earlier than usual – and will be broadcast live on ABC. The preview will begin at 6:30 p.m. ET.Here’s an early reminder to set your clocks accordingly — today is the first day of Daylight Saving Time in the United States

Is the Oscars live?

The show is available with cable subscriptions on ABC.com and the ABC app. You can also watch on services like Hulu Live TV, YouTubeTV, AT&T TV, and FuboTV.

Who hosts the Oscars?

Jimmy Kimmel, who hosted last year’s ceremony, will serve as host for the fourth time. That puts him alongside four-time Oscar winners Whoopi Goldberg and Jack Lemmon, and among multiple Oscar hosts, Kimmel trails only Johnny Carson (5), Billy G. Risto (9th) and Bob Hope (11th). Kimmel said in an interview with The Associated Press that the upcoming presidential election may be a topic for him and that he did not intend to strike in a very political tone.

“That’s not really what the Oscars are about,” Kimmel said. “That doesn’t mean I won’t make a joke or two about it. But mentioning the name of someone who shouldn’t be named at the Oscars is not really my goal.”

Will there be a performance?

Yes, all nominated original songs will be performed on the show. That means Ryan Gosling will serenade everyone with Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s “Barbie” power ballad “I’m Just Ken,” while Billie Eilish will soulfully sing her “What Was I Made For” co-written with Finneas O’Connell. Other song nominees include Diane Warren’s “The Fire Inside” from “Flamin’ Hot” by Becky G, Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson’s “It Never Went” from “American Symphony Orchestra” Away” and Scott George’s “Wahzazhe” (A Song for My People)” from Killers of the Flower Moon.

Steven Spielberg, Emily Blunt, Cynthia Erivo, Sally Field, Ariana Grande, Ben Kingsley, Melissa McCarthy, Issa Ray, Tim Robbins, Mary Steenburgen, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlize Theron, Christoph Waltz and Forest Whitaker are the last to be announced host.

Other celebrities set to grace the Dolby Stage include Scarface co-stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino (who may not be together), as well as Gosling, Zendaya, Matthew McCone Na, Chris Hemsworth, Dwayne Johnson, Regina King, Jennifer Lawrence, John Mulaney, Octavia Spencer, Jessica Lange, Nicholas · Cage, Mahershala Ali, Sam Rockwell, Lupita Nyong’o and Rami Yusuf.

There will also be some fun cast reunions: “Barbie’s” America Ferrera and Kate McKinnon will perform funny segments together on stage, and “Beetlejuice” stars Michael Keaton and Kathryn ·O’Hara will also appear on stage together.

What are the 2024 Best Picture Oscar nominees?

The 10 works nominated for best picture are: “American Novel”; “Anatomy of a Fall”; “Barbie”; “Killers”; “Killers of the Flower Moon”; “The Master”; “Oppenheimer”; ”; “poor thing”; and “area of interest”.

How do I watch Oscar-nominated movies?

Many of this year’s Oscar nominees are streaming on various platforms. The Associated Press has this handy guide to help Oscar cramming.

Who is the favorite?

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is the frontrunner. Nolan, the most beloved director, is also expected to win his first Oscar. The Best Actress award will likely come down to a battle between Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Emma Stone (Poor Things). If Gladstone wins, she will become the first Native American to win an Oscar. Best Actor is also likely to be a tight race between Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) and Paul Giamatti (“The Old Guard”). Both will be first-time winners. Giamatti’s co-star Da’Vine Joy Randolph is expected to win best supporting actress, while Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) is expected to win best supporting actor. His closest competition is considered to be Ryan Gosling in “Barbie.” You can check out the predictions from AP film writers.

What happened to “Barbie” being snubbed?

While “Barbie,” the top-grossing film of 2023, received eight nominations, much of the discussion centered around the film’s lack of nominations. Greta Gerwig was left out of the director category, and Margot Robbie also missed out on the best actress award. In these omissions, some saw reflections of the misogyny parodied in “Barbie,” while others noted the harsh reception comedy has historically received at the Oscars. Nominations for “Barbie” include Best Adapted Screenplay (Gerwig and Noah Baumbach), Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera, and Best Supporting Actress for “What Was I Made For” and “I’m Just” Ken’s two Best Song nominations.

Are there any changes at the Oscars this year?

While recent Oscars have been marred by everything from applause to envelope confusion to controversy during the televised ceremony, there are no major changes to this year’s ceremony (other than starting an hour earlier). All awards will be broadcast live (although honorable mentions at the earlier, non-televised Governors Awards will remain separate). The Academy is adding a new Best Casting award, but that trophy won’t be awarded until the 2026 Academy Awards.

What else is there to look for?

Composer John Williams received a record 49th Oscar nomination for Best Score for Raiders of the Lost Ark and his 54th Oscar nomination for Best Score. Godzilla will participate in the Oscars for the first time. “Godzilla Minus One” is nominated for the Best Visual Effects Award for the first time. Two non-English-language films are nominated for the Best Picture Award: the German Auschwitz concentration camp drama “Interest Zone” and the French courtroom drama “Anatomy of a Fall.”
