A 13-year-old boy has been arrested for murdering an elderly man on a Denver bus. The reason: the 60-year-old man’s legs were blocking the aisle, and the boy was unhappy.
Richard Sanchez’s family learned he was dead days later when they went to file a missing persons report, the New York Post reported. The shocking incident happened just blocks from Sanchez’s home.
The shocking incident took place on Sunday night when the two got into an argument while traveling on a public bus. The 13-year-old insists Sanchez deliberately blocked the aisle with his legs. When the older man said he couldn’t move his legs, the minor shot him.
“There appeared to be a verbal exchange between the suspect and the victim regarding the victim’s legs blocking the aisle on the bus before the suspect shot the victim,” Denver police said in a statement.
Sanchez was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, and one person was injured but did not require hospitalization.
Less than a week after the heartbreaking murder, police arrested the 13-year-old suspect on Thursday.
“After an extensive investigation, detectives identified the suspect as a 13-year-old male who was taken into custody late yesterday afternoon and is being investigated for first-degree murder, which is ongoing,” police said.
“The final decision on charging will be made by the Denver District Attorney’s Office,” it added.
Sanchez’s family did not learn of Sanchez’s death until the following Monday when Sanchez was reported missing to police.
“It was difficult because we didn’t know where he was and he was in the hospital the whole time and they didn’t contact us,” said Joseph Chavez, Sanchez’s grandson. “No one was with him when he took his last breath. “
