Web Desk, 23/07/2025

Government sources said on Tuesday that the vacant post of Vice President is to be filled as “as soon as possible”, a specific time limit with constitutional criteria is not mentioned.

Sources also said that there would be no farewell speech for Jagdeep Dhikar, whose resignation as Vice President has been accepted by President Drupadi Murmu.

Dhankhar resigned on a health basis on Monday on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament.

Sources also said that after emptying the Enclave of Vice President of Jagdeep Dhankhar – the official residence of the Vice President – he will be allotted a government bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi.

Sources said that according to the current criteria, the security protocol will continue for him.

“As per constitutional provisions, the vacant post of Vice President should be filled as soon as possible,” said a source.

The Vice President is also the President of the Rajya Sabha. The House has a vice president and a panel of vice -presidents who are presiding over the proceedings.

Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening “to prioritize health care and follow medical advice”.

He sent his resignation letter to President Draupadi Murmu.

“To prioritize health care and follow medical advice, I resigned as the vice -president of India, immediately effective according to Article 67 (A) of the Constitution,” Dhankhar said in his letter.

He said, “I expand my deepest gratitude to my His Majesty – for his unwavering support and amazing working relationship that maintains during his tenure,” he said.

Dhankhar also expressed deep gratitude to the Council of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers.

Opposition leaders have expressed surprise at Dhankhar’s decision and said that there are “very deep reasons” for his resignation.

The vice -president is elected by an electoral college, meeting members of both houses of Parliament, according to the system of proportional representation through single transferable vote and voting in such elections is done by secret voting.
