Mumbai:
NCP-SCP leader and MP Supriya Sule on Tuesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government for implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the country and stressed that it was an attempt to evade the electoral bonds issue.
“Everything that will happen next week will be related to the Lok Sabha elections. Why are they not implementing it until now, maybe it is to cover up the electoral bonds issue, but that won’t happen if we win,” Ms. Sule pointed out.
Ms. Sule questioned the BJP, saying “the country wants to know what happened in the electoral bonds, what is the truth and who is behind it.”
Meanwhile, the State Bank of India has provided data on electoral bonds to the Election Commission of India on the directions of the Supreme Court, it said on Tuesday.
The Election Commission of India in a post on The State Bank of India has provided data on electoral bonds to the Election Commission of India today (March 12, 2024).”
Earlier, a five-judge Constitution bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra on March 12 ordered banks to disclose the details.
In its February 15 judgment, the Supreme Court had fixed the deadline for SBI to March 6, but SBI last week moved the Supreme Court seeking extension of the deadline to June 30 to comply with the court’s direction.
Passing the order on SBI’s application, the bench ordered: “The materials submitted by SBI in the application indicate that the information sought is readily available. Accordingly, SBI’s application seeking extension of time to June 30 is dismissed. SBI is directed to disclose Details as of close of business March 12, 2024.
“The Constitution Bench also warned the SBI that failure to comply with the latest directions and willful violation of its orders would amount to contempt of court.
The Supreme Court struck down the electoral bonds scheme that allowed anonymous funding to political parties and ordered the SBI to immediately stop issuing electoral bonds.
