After receiving the report of an unknown liquid, the police were called at a address at Hyde Road at 5.27 pm on Monday evening.
Explosive Ordnance Settlement (EOD) team participated to assess the item, in nearby properties, residents advised to stay indoors, while access to the area was restricted.
It was then decided that a planned withdrawal of people living in the surrounding area will be held on Tuesday 24 June, the residents of six separate roads asked to leave their homes by 9 am.
Sussex police Officers live on the spot, while the roads are closed, which does not cause immediate risk to the public.
Detective Superintendent John Robson said: “Our priority is to protect people. We are satisfied that there is no immediate risk for the residents and to reduce the impact on local residents, the evacuation of nearby houses can be safe and effectively fulfilled during daylight.
“We will have several uniformed officers on Tuesday morning to assist in employed withdrawals and give further advice.
“We will encourage the residents of Hyde Road, Camden Road, Calverli Road, West Terrace, Bath Road and Grove Road to leave their addresses by 9 pm.
“We appreciate the support of residents and comprehensive community who will be affected by the necessary precautionary tasks, which we need to take, and hopefully they will be able to return to their homes fast.
“I would like to thank them for their patience and understanding, while we bring this incident to a safe conclusion.
“The item is safe and the road is closed, and many police will be present to provide assurances as we work with emergency services and other partner agencies to reduce dissolution.
“Public safety is our priority, and Cordon will take to about 160 houses. We will allow residents to return to our homes as soon as possible, such as safe for them to do so.”
