Fog will become more widespread and dense in some areas on Thursday night, with visibility dropping to below 100m in some places. The fog will then thin and move into low clouds late night or early Friday morning.
Forecasters remind people to check road conditions when driving, allow extra driving time, and modify plans if necessary to avoid delays caused by fog.
The Met Office advises: “Make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights and check that they are working properly before setting off.”
Bus and train services as well as flights and ferry travel may also be affected by fog, with the Met Office advising people to be prepared for changes to weather warnings and to follow the advice of relevant travel companies.
The heavy rain comes as parts of the UK stretch from the East Midlands to the south. Heavy rain spreads during the day, becoming persistent and heavy at times, and then pours in a northeasterly direction during the evening and night. Some parts of the country received 20 to 30 millimeters of rain, with some places receiving rain in just a few hours. Temperatures of 40 to 50 millimeters were recorded in some isolated areas of southern England.
