The lawyer tries to attack the CJI in the Supreme Court, accused of insulting Sanatan Dharma, says Gawai says ‘not distracted’

Ankita Jain, 06/10/202506/10/2025
A lawyer tried to attack India Chief Justice (CJI) BR Gavai on Monday, October 6, when the court was hearing cases listed before itself.

The lawyer allegedly tried to remove his shoes and throw it into CJI Gawai, when he went to the day, cited sources, informing the bar and bench.

His identity has not been confirmed yet.

His attempt to attack CJI was allegedly halted by security officers present in the court, who quickly intervened and expelled them.

The lawyer said, “Sanatan’s upman Nahi Sahg (will not tolerate the insult to Sanatan Dharma),” the lawyer said, according to the bar and bench, when he was getting out of the room.

However, CJI Gawai remained calm and asked lawyers to continue with their affairs and arguments.

Justice Gawai was quoted as a bar and a bench, “Don’t get distracted by all. We are not distracted. These things do not impress me.”

The incident was possibly associated with the earlier comments of CJI Gawai in a case related to the restoration of Lord Vishnu idol in the Khajuraho group of temples.

“Go and ask the deity to do something now. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. So go and pray. It is an archaeological site and needs to allow ASI,” CJI Gawai commented according to B&B, “CJI Gawai allegedly dismissed the petition.

However, his remarks shared a controversy on social media after remarks, alleging that the statement hurt religious sentiments.

Later, the CJI had clarified that he respects all religions and it did not mean to hurt the feelings of any community. “I respect all religions,” CJI Gavai said.

The Supreme Court’s security unit began an investigation into the incident of the attack according to a news agency PTI.

Former Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Advocate Rohit Pandey criticized the Act and called for action in the case. “Today’s incident is a very sad. If a lawyer has attempted or tried to attack in court, we strongly condemn it. He is a member of our bar. We recently inquired and revealed that he is a member of 2011. But it is a very sad incident,” Pandey told news agency Annie.

He said, “He (lawyer) made this attempt based on the comment made by CJI in a Lord Vishnu case case. It is a very sad incident. We condemn this strongly, and if this incident is true, action should be taken,” he said.

More details are awaited in this case.
