The Lamborghini Huracan successor is confirmed to debut in August 2024

  • Set to debut in August, the successor to the Lamborghini Huracan will feature a plug-in hybrid system built around an in-house-developed V8 engine.
Lamborghini has trademarked the “Temerario”, presumably for the Huracan replacement, in line with its tradition of bold bull-inspired names.

For Lamborghini, the V10 supercar has been the bread and butter for the longest time since the company found Volkswagen Group as its new owner. The Italian manufacturer’s latest V10 supercar, the Lamborghini Huracan has been a successful model since its launch in 2014. Although production is expected to continue until the end of the year, it has been flying off the shelves, with demand outstripping supply by nearly a year.

The recent unveiling of the STJ served as the final phase for the supercar era, marking the end of Volkswagen Group models featuring naturally aspirated V-10 engines, a tradition shared with the now-discontinued Audi R8. However, a new addition to Lamborghini’s lineup is expected in late 2024, with a new hybrid-powered supercar on the horizon.

The news was announced in Sant’Agata Bolognese’s Q1 2024 results document. Federico Foschini, head of sales and marketing at Lamborghini, paid more attention to this topic. Set to debut in August, the Huracan’s replacement will feature a plug-in hybrid system built around an in-house-developed V-8 engine, a departure from Lamborghini’s usual practice of borrowing powertrains from other VW Group brands.

Asia-Pacific region director Francesco Scardoni previously highlighted Lamborghini’s financial strength, and supported the brand’s ability to develop its new models independently. Unfortunately, the iconic 5.2-liter FSI engine will be gone, aligning with the VW Group’s wider initiatives to downsize and comply with stricter emissions regulations. How similar the electrified powertrain is to the new Urus SE, which also features a plug-in hybrid V8 setup, remains to be seen.

Foscini emphasizes the superiority of the plug-in hybrid V8 over a conventional internal combustion engine, citing additional capabilities enabled by the electric motor, such as active torque vectoring. Interesting rumors suggest that the V8 engine’s turbocharger won’t rev until 7,000 rpm, with an impressive 10,000 rpm redline, paired with an eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission borrowed from the Revuelto.

Looking ahead to the successor to the Huracan, Lamborghini has already acquired a name that lives up to its tradition of fierce bull-inspired monikers. A trademark filing for “Tamerio” with the European Union Intellectual Property Office hints at exciting things to come.

With the impending launch of the Huracan successor, Lamborghini will complete its lineup’s electrification journey, with the Revuelto V-12 serving as a plug-in hybrid and the Urus SE replacing the previous V8-powered models. Looking further ahead, Lamborghini is preparing to introduce its first EV, the Lanzarote, by 2028, and the all-electric second-generation Urus in 2029. The Revuelto will continue its run into the early 2030s, the company confirmed.
