January’s full moon It will rise on the fourth day and appear unusually large in the sky. This is the last in a series of so-called supermoons that begin in October.
A supermoon occurs when the moon and Earth are closer than usual. This means the moon appears 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual.
The official January moon’s fullest point occurs around 10 a.m. Saturday morning. But the night before, it should have been a large, bright orb.
January’s moon is sometimes called the wolf moon, cold moon, or hard moon. These names are often considered traditional, although many of them have actually only recently become popular in the mainstream.
Unlike many other similar celestial sights, viewing a supermoon requires no special equipment or preparation. In fact, viewing from a busy location may actually be better than other, more subtle events, as objects on the horizon can highlight the moon’s relative size and drama.
The January moon will hang higher in the sky than any other moon of the year. This should make it easier to see and watch for longer – although it will also make it look less noticeable, since taller satellites tend to look less large compared to objects visible from Earth.
January’s supermoon will arrive around the same time as the Quadrantid meteor shower. This may mean it’s hard to see the latterbecause the brightness of the full moon will make it harder to see meteor showers as they streak across the sky.
