Itanagar, Nov 4 (IANS) The final leg of the ‘Battlefield Trek’ to mark the 63rd Walong Day commemoration will be conducted from Ashi Hill to Tri-Junction Post in Arunachal Pradesh on November 14-15, concluding a series of treks organized in honor of the brave soldiers of the 1962 Walong war, officials said on Tuesday.
Defense spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat said the event will be attended by Indian Army soldiers as well as 20 civilians who will recall the historical paths where bravery, sacrifice and resilience were part of India’s military heritage.
Ashi Hill holds special significance in the history of the Battle of Walong, where the Indian soldiers displayed indomitable courage despite overwhelming odds and fought valiantly against the numerically superior Chinese forces. The Tri-Junction Post stands as a symbolic site of the first counter-attack launched by the Indian Army during the 1962 war, representing the determination and unyielding fighting spirit of the Indian soldiers. The visit was a heartfelt tribute to the heroes who protected the honor of the country and inspired generations with their unmatched bravery.
It also marks the conclusion of the series of Battlefield Treks conducted in the Walong sector, each re-visiting key battle locations and reconnecting the participants with the rich heritage of courage, endurance and national pride, the spokesperson said.
He said the Battlefield Trek series underlines the Indian Army’s continuous effort to honor its heroes, promote historical awareness and inculcate patriotism among the youth and celebrate the immortal spirit of the Walong.
Lt Col Rawat said that as part of the commemoration, a series of programs would be organized in Walong, Arunachal Pradesh on November 15. These included a flower laying ceremony, a film commemorating the 63rd Walong Day, followed by a jazz band, light and sound show, sand art and drone displays, followed by interactions with war veterans.
A wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the Walong Monument the following day (16 November), followed by a closing ceremony.
Walong Day is celebrated by the Indian Army in mid-November every year to mark the indomitable courage displayed by a few hundred Indian soldiers against the heavily armed fighters of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
Apart from serving military personnel, government officials, veterans and next of kin of those who sacrificed their lives in the 27-day long battle of Walong, a large number of citizens participate in the commemoration in honor of the bravehearts.
