Kolkata, 23 September (IANS) BJP IT cell chief and party central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya on Tuesday accused the Mamta Banerjee government of “criminal negligence” on the rain-inspired disaster in Kolkata.
He claimed that it could have been avoided that the state had taken action on the warning issued by the Meteorological Department a month ago.
Large parts of the city were submerged after one night of heavy rains, causing severe waterfalls, electrical outages and several deaths due to electrocution from the submerged living stars.
Malavia also described the current disaster as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Mayor, Firhad Hakim as “a direct result of criminal negligence and breathtaking apathy”.
“The Alipore Met Department issued a warning about continuous rain during the puja a month ago. In a month. Their response! Next, deaf, no plan. No plan. No preparation. They simply sit back and let the water grow.
Malavia also claimed that illegal ponds, unauthorized construction and negligence in upgrading the drainage system in the city resulted in the current pathetic situation in Kolkata.
“The dreams of thousands of small traders have been washed away, the goods are lost in the goods forever. It is a sad reality of Mamta’s promise to make Kolkata like London-a hollow-out, floods where citizens pay the final value for corruption. It is a man-made deluse of the epic ratio.”
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon that the government has opened a 24 -hour control room at the State Secretariat to monitor the situation. She claimed that she personally was overseeing relief and rescue operations.
CM said, “I am not inaugurating any Durga Puja Pandal today. I will only attend some inauguration in the districts. We all have to be cautious for the next few days.”
