Thiruvananthapuram: Doctors at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital on Tuesday said the condition of 19-year-old Sreekutty, who was seriously injured after being pushed from a moving train by a drunken co-passenger in Varkala, remains critical.

Srikutty suffered serious head and spinal injuries after falling from the Kerala Express on Sunday night.

He is currently being treated in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is still on ventilator support.

Based on the instructions of State Health Minister Veena George, a multidisciplinary team of experts, including neurosurgeons, is monitoring his condition round the clock.

Dr Jayachandran, superintendent of the medical college, said, “He has suffered head injuries and brain damage. Although he is receiving the best available medical care, his condition remains critical.”

He clarified that the hospital is providing the highest level of treatment in response to concerns raised by the victim’s family about the quality of medical care.

The accused, identified as Suresh Kumar of Panachamudu in Thiruvananthapuram district, has been arrested and charged with attempt to murder.

He was produced before the magistrate and sent to judicial custody.

Police said Kumar, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, confessed to the crime during interrogation.

The incident occurred when the victim, who was traveling from Aluva to Thiruvananthapuram, had gone to use the toilet.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), a heated argument broke out between the two after they allegedly refused to move from the door.

In anger, the accused pushed her from behind, due to which she fell from the moving train near Varkala station.

Sreekutty, also known as Sona, was later found in a critical condition and taken to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident, which has sparked widespread outrage and renewed demands for stronger security measures for women passengers on trains.
