The central government informs the population and caste census starting from 1 March 2027

The central government on Monday informed the population census, whose process will start in March 2027.

According to a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, “In the practice of powers provided by Section 3 of the Census Act 1948 and on March 26, 2018, in the suppression of the Government of India notification in the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Central Government announced that the census of India’s population would be taken during the year 2027, as the house will be released by the Ministry.”

The reference date for the census will be on March 1, 2027, leaving the center region of Ladakh and the snow-bounds in the center region of Jammu and Kashmir, except for non-radical regions and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

In addition, the reference date for the centers of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous regions of the centers of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be on October 1, 2026.

On 15 June, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the preparations for the upcoming census during a meeting in New Delhi, along with Union Home Secretary, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RG and CCI) and other senior officials.

Sharing the details in a post on X, Amit Shah said, “Review of the 16th census preparation with senior officials. Tomorrow, the census gazette notification will be issued. The census will include caste calculation for the first time in the census. With 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and about 1.3 lakh census.

“The census will be held in two phases. In Phase 1, House Listing Operation (HLO), each household housing status, property and facilities will be collected.

Subsequently, in the second phase, population calculation (PE), demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other details of each person will be collected in each house. In the census, caste will also be calculated.

For census activities, about 34 lakh couteters and supervisors and about 1.3 lakh census officials will be deployed. It is a 16th census since its beginning and is 8th since independence.

The upcoming census will be organized through digital means using mobile applications. Provision of self-catering will also be made available to people.

Very stringent data security measures will be kept to ensure data security at the time of collection, transmission and storage. (AI)
