If you’re looking for a free VPN for your iPhone, Windscribe is my top choice. Windscribe is based in Canada and offers users 10GB of free data every month if you sign up with a confirmed email address. Impressively, you can also sign up without providing your email—a rarity among VPN providers, especially free ones—and although your data is capped at 2GB per month, it’s still a hefty amount. While some free VPNs offer higher data rates, finding one that lets you stream while traveling abroad can be nearly impossible.

The Windscribe iPhone app is a bit complex and confusing, with a lot of text and buttons. The home screen features a prominent Connect button for quick access to recent or selected servers, and there are dedicated server locations for streaming. The list of server locations is easy to access, but it’s a little tricky to distinguish which of the 10 available countries are free.

From the home screen, you can customize your experience by selecting from a variety of protocols, including WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, Stealth, and WStunnel, so you can choose your preferred protocol in terms of speed and security.

The user interface is a bit unusual and a bit confusing, but fun (Alex Lee)

I really like Windscribe’s ROBERT tool, which is a domain and IP blocking system that blocks ads, trackers, and malware at the DNS level. This tool is customizable, giving you control over browsing security while increasing speed. All features, including ad blocking, are available to free users—all without paywalls.

During testing, Windscribe’s free plan performed well. Granted, the speeds aren’t the best, and streams take a while to load. Browsing the web on Safari was also a bit slow, but the fact that I was able to access local streaming services was a real highlight – BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4 were all accessible, which isn’t something you often see with free VPNs.

But is it safe? Windscribe has come a long way since the 2021 Ukrainian server incident, when authorities seized two unencrypted servers. Since then, the company has overhauled its infrastructure to ensure something like this never happens again. It switches to a RAM-only server, which means no data is permanently stored, and employs perfect forward secrecy, so even if someone gets hold of the private key, they can’t decrypt past sessions. Best of all, keys are rotated regularly for security.

Windscribe’s systems have also been independently audited. Its desktop application was audited by Leviathan Security Group in 2021, its mobile application was audited in 2022, and its entire new infrastructure was audited by PacketLabs in 2024. Every problem discovered was promptly resolved.

While 10GB of data is enough for moderate use, it might not be too far for those who frequently stream or download large files. But if you use it occasionally, Windscribe is a good choice, and it works flexibly without requiring personal information, which is a huge win for privacy-conscious users. If you like the independence of Windscribe and not being affiliated with Kape or Nord Securities, you may like the Professional plan, which gives you unlimited access – no data limits and all local server packages.

Who is it best for?

If you don’t want to pay a penny, Windscribe’s free tier is my favorite free VPN for iPhone and iPad users. There’s a 10GB data cap, but it works exactly like the paid plans, meaning you can access streaming services while traveling abroad.
