You may already be thinking about New Year’s resolutions. It could be something new, like learning to play the guitar, or it could be the age-old ‘get more active’.
But there’s something about winter that makes going to the gym seem daunting – perhaps it’s the cold mornings, dark evenings or the allure of leftover Christmas chocolate. But good activewear can do wonders for inspiration.
So here are the biggest gym-wear trends to know about this winter — from the new shapes of leggings to the shoes everyone is wearing outside of spin class.
Fold-over flares and asymmetric tops
“While leggings will always reign supreme,” says fabletics“We’ve seen a real shift toward fold-over, wide-leg workout pants – they’re comfortable, flattering and feel fresh after a season of skin-tight styles,” says Frances Fountain, director of buying.
After years of wearing compression leggings, the pendulum has definitely swung in the other direction. The return of the flared silhouette brings back the spirit of the noughties in studio dressing, especially for yoga and Pilates.
Meanwhile, tops are becoming more upscale and more feminine.
“Light layered pieces are having a moment,” says Fountain. “We love the ruched cross-back designs for that new Pilates girl vibe, and the off-the-shoulder sweats are so cute to wear before or after class.”
Figure-hugging tops with more design details like intricate straps or asymmetric neckline are on trend, and elevate your gym look in a way that doesn’t look like you’re recycling an old pajama top.

head to toe burgundy
Burgundy has been dubbed the color of the season this winter and now it’s finally moved to gym wear.
“Burgundy is huge!” “You’re seeing it everywhere on the high street and now it’s even officially gym-approved,” says Fountain.
Deep, earthy colors like chocolate, plum and forest green are this season’s favourites.
“We’re also loving Christmas colors done in a modern way,” says Fountain. “Deep greens, deep reds and warm, festive colors feel perfect for winter workouts.”

Cable-knit sweats and soft fleece
Cable knit may seem counterintuitive as an activewear fabric, but ribbed fleece and bouquet-style knits are dominating the layers of gym wear, just look at Kendall Jenner’s viral Alo Yoga collaboration, which relied heavily on these soft-focus textures.
“For me, it’s all about winter comfort,” says Fountain, “I’m living in cozy woolen jumpers and soft sweats that still look put together.
She says anything that’s “super soft, easy to wear, and cut to just the right amount” is this season’s biggest outerwear trend.
The cropped-woolen silhouette that sits well over high-waisted leggings or fold-over flares is becoming the unofficial uniform of post-workout coffee runs.
Comfortable, but cool enough to wear all day long.

hybrid trainer
So if you haven’t noticed by now, versatility is leading this season’s trends, and trainers are no longer confined to the gym floor.
“This year it’s less about gym trainers and more about hybrid sneakers that you can wear anywhere,” says Fountain.
This is the shift we have seen in fashion, with functional comfort re-imagined as part of everyday uniforms.
“Around the office we’re all pairing up Nike Air Rifts with our activewear – they give that sporty-street mix we love,” she says.
Retro styles like slimline trainers or the new ‘sneakerina’ are also big. “T90 and Speedcat ballet slippers are huge right now,” notes Fountain — a nod to the 2000s sports aesthetic that’s finding its way into Pilates studios and beyond.
So the guideline for trainer trends this season is to find something that looks as good with a trench coat and coffee as it does on the treadmill.
