Fort Stewart said in a Facebook post that “the number of casualties has been stated and the situation continues.” It is not clear that the number of casualties includes injuries, deaths or both.
“We are currently assessing the situation, but we can confirm an active shooter,” said Lieutenant Colonel Angel Tomko.
A post on Fort Stewart’s Facebook page asked all personnel of the lock down area to “stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors.”
Located about 40 miles (64 km) in the south -west of Savanna, Fort Stewart is the largest army post to the east of the Mississippi River. It is a home of thousands of soldiers who have been assigned to the third infantry division of the army and family members.
The fort said on social media, “All gates on Fort Stewart are currently closed due to lockdown situation.”
