while the future audi‘s new sports car has been defined concept c – CEO Gernot Dollner has confirmed that its sales will remain virtually unchanged over the next two years – Audi’s mainstream line-up is also taking shape, with a new entry-level Audi being heavily considered.
talking to Independent At the recent Munich Motor Show, Döllner admitted that the Audi line-up was confusing to buyers, but the new clarity that is working through the organization – led by the Concept C – is setting things right.
“There’s some confusion about the naming, I hope we’ve cleared that up,” Dollner said. “So, we have A for flat floor cars and Q for SUVs, and then the number will represent the size of the car, the segment it’s in. So I hope we’ve got it right.
“I would say basically we need three limousines [saloons/hatchbacks]One four, one six and one eight. And with A, B, C and maybe D segments for SUVs.
“Then we are sorting out the A segment right now, where, of course, Q3 and Q4 are defined.
Other smaller Audis are definitely in the plans, but under discussion, as Döllner explained: “We see what, in the electric age, Audi’s A segment portfolio could look like, but it will be a focused one.
“In 2026, production of the A1 and Q2 will cease. And we are defining right now what the future could look like in the A segment and how our entry car is positioned – how far down we will go in terms of size.”

Audi’s fellow Volkswagen brands VW, Skoda and Cupra are all unveiling new electric small cars based on the same platform, could this be something Audi can take advantage of?
“This small urban family was defined before I got into Audi,” Dollner said. “The A-segment will definitely always be a group solution that we create and take it and use it at Audi. Then we bring in all these specific themes, ideas like we did with the A3, the first real premium A-segment car. So, we’ve proven that this is a good way to go for Audi.”

Döllner also confirmed that Audi is now working at “Chinese speed”, with the Concept C going from initial idea to production in 36 months. And this will also apply to future Audi models, some of the knowledge gained from Audi’s joint venture in China will be useful.
“Not everything from China can be copied,” Dollner said. “I mean they have working conditions that we don’t want in Europe, to be honest, 24/7 for tooling, etc. It’s just not possible and not a goal to do. But in the early concept stage, bringing small teams together and giving them full responsibility lets them do the work and makes them responsible for all the details needed. It’s a way to gain speed. And that’s what we did with Concept C.”
