Oral-B’s line-up electric toothbrush There is a vast, often surprising collection of models with nearly identical names and subtly different feature sets. But which one is the best?
At the top of the range is the iO series, a premium brush that promises oral-bIt’s the ultimate in clean thanks to its near-silent magnetic drive technology. But even within this flagship family, the choice is vast, from entry level to iO2 Up to the ridiculously expensive, feature-packed iO10.
These are the brushes that Oral-B emphasizes most in its marketing, so what are you really paying for by spending more? Is an expensive brush actually better at cleaning your teeth (spoiler: it’s not), or are you just paying extra for things like AI coaching and a color screen? And how does the premium iO series stack up against the Pro 3, the black sheep of the Oral-B family? Those are the questions I answer in this review.
To help you find the right brush for your needs and budget, I’ve presented Oral-B’s five most popular models ranked by their speed.
How we tested

I spent several weeks over the course of the year testing each of the five Oral-B toothbrushes, replacing them with my normal brush one after another to measure the results. To test on different mouths, my co-tester John Axworthy I enlisted the help of my little one while a friend of mine was in orthodontics and tried out each brush to see how they performed. Collectively the following were considered:
- Cleaning: After each brush, I checked the feeling of dentist-fresh smoothness on the tooth surface. I noted no differences in results between the Pro 3’s gear-driven motor and the IO series’ magnetic drives.
- features: I tested each model’s unique features to see if they’re worth the extra cost. For example, for the iO6 and iO9, this meant evaluating the usefulness of the on-handle display. I tested the pressure sensor on each model to make sure it gives a clear warning when brushing too hard.
- Battery: I ran each brush down to a full charge to see how its battery life fared under normal, twice-daily use. Once empty, I timed how long it would take each to return to 100 percent.
- price: I considered the ongoing cost of replacement brush heads for the Pro 3 versus the more expensive, proprietary heads of the IO series, which every other brush on this list uses.
