Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 14 (IANS) Senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday hit out at his own party as early vote counting trends show a disappointing performance for the Indian alliance in Bihar.
While the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is leading by a significant margin, Tharoor, while speaking to the media, raised questions on key aspects of the election results.
“At the moment it is a question of leadership…let’s wait for the Election Commission to discuss and reveal the results,” he told reporters. He said all parties, including the Congress and the RJD, should study their performance in detail.
Tharoor said, “One has to look at the totality because there are many factors during elections. There are many issues to be looked into, let’s analyze what happened. I was not invited there to campaign, so those who went there would know better what happened there.”
He also said that there is no senior ally Congress party in Bihar.
Tharoor also blamed the NDA government for allegedly offering benefits to women voters just before the Model Code of Conduct came into force.
Citing similar practices in Maharashtra, he said, “Whether we like it or not… it is legal under our laws… I am afraid this is not the first time that we have seen state governments doing such things to benefit certain sections of the society.”
His comments come amid early polling trends that suggest the Indian camp is indeed hurt by Congress’s weak performance.
According to media reports, out of the 61 seats on which the party had contested, the party is leading only on five seats.
Incidentally, this is not the first time that Tharoor has been attacked, recently he has been doing so at regular intervals, causing a lot of resentment, especially in Kerala, where the Congress is fighting the CPI-M and the BJP.
