Since last week, the Myanmar military has conducted a series of military operations against the KK Park cybercrime complex, leading to the evacuation of large numbers of people – mostly foreign nationals who worked there – to the Thai border town of Mae Sot.
More than 1,500 people from 28 countries have fled and are now being cared for in Thailand, according to a statement from local authorities.
Prime Minister Anutin said the Indian ambassador would meet the immigration chief to discuss expediting the legal verification process ahead of the return of 500 Indian citizens to India.
“India has asked for cooperation from Thailand and they do not want the burden to fall on us,” Anutin said.
“They will send a plane to pick up these victims… the plane will land directly in Mae Sot,” he said.
Earlier this year, India sent a plane to bring back its citizens after a regional crackdown freed thousands of people from cyber scam centers along the Thai-Myanmar border.
Myanmar’s KK Park is a notorious enclave known among international law enforcement and diplomats for its involvement in international cyber scandals.
The huge KK Park complex and other nearby complexes are primarily run by Chinese criminal gangs and guarded by local militia groups linked to the Myanmar military.
The border areas between Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia have become hotbeds of online fraud since the COVID-19 pandemic, and the United Nations says billions of dollars have been made from trafficking hundreds of thousands of people forced to work in the complexes.
