London commuters told to “avoid the Northern line” due to signal failures travel chaos Uproar in the capital for the fourth day
passengers are using it northern line Long delays, congestion and cancellations have been experienced since Sunday evening.
The equipment that relays the location of trains to the network has failed near Stockwell, meaning Transport for London (tfl) Controllers have to manually “talk” drivers through the field. This process reduces train frequency significantly.
The cause of the problem has still not been identified by TfL despite several days of engineering work.
A statement by tfl Reads: “Please avoid the Northern Line where possible. It will be faster for you to use alternative routes if you can.”
The busy Underground line connects North and South London with routes to Central London via Charing Cross and Bank.
London Buses, Southeastern, Thameslink, trams and South Western Railways are all accepting valid tickets for any reasonable alternative route.
The service was also suspended between Stockwell and Morden on Tuesday while the signal failure at Tooting Broadway was rectified.
TfL customer operations director Nick Dent said: “We apologize to customers affected by the delays on the Northern line from Sunday. “We have identified a fault in the signaling equipment around the Stockwell area, which means our service controllers need to manually talk trains through this part of the network.
“Our engineers are working hard to identify and fix the fault, including deploying advanced testing equipment, and we will make every effort to restore a good service as soon as possible. We are advising customers to allow extra time for their journeys, and to check before traveling using the TfL Journey Planner or TfL Go app.”
