Less than 10 days after disbanding the entire Supercharger team, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that the US-based EV maker will continue to expand its EV charging network under the same brand in the coming days. Musk, who also owns X (formerly Twitter), took to the social media platform to announce his company’s commitment to expanding the Supercharger network in the United States. This could prove to be an olive branch for other US-based EV makers like Rivian, Ford Motor and General Motors. These EV manufacturers have adopted Tesla’s charging connectors for their electric cars.

Elon Musk’s change in attitude comes after his May 1 decision to eliminate his nearly 500-employee team, including its senior director, Rebecca Tinucci. Job cuts at Tesla have been in the news recently as the EV maker gave another 10 percent of its workforce the pink slip last month. Soon after the decision, Musk admitted that development of the Tesla Supercharger network would slow down.

Elon Musk’s latest announcement contradicts what he has said before. Msuk wrote, “Just to reiterate: Tesla will spend over $500 million this year expanding our Supercharger network to build thousands of new chargers. That’s just on new sites and expansion, not counting operation costs, which are much higher.” The $500 million investment really indicates Tesla’s efforts to rapidly expand the Supercharger network.

Tesla’s decision to disband the Supercharger team will affect other carmakers besides Rivian, Ford and GM. The EV maker joined forces with Kia, Honda, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Stellantis, among others, amid efforts to democratize EV charging networks across the US. Tesla currently has about 6,250 Supercharger stations and more than 57,000 connectors. The EV maker offers more fast chargers than any other provider in the US.
