The 2017 Wimbledon winner met her groom-to-be by chance when he randomly bumped into her and asked her for a selfie in New York in August 2021.

The former WTA world No. 1 told American media: “My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk.

“I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly, he turns and says, ‘Good luck at the US Open.’ I was left thinking, ‘Wow, he’s so handsome’.”

Muguruza revealed that she and Borges continued meeting each other and often went on walks around Central Park.

After embarking on a relationship, Borges finally popped the question while down on one knee in Marbella, Spain.

Muguruza recalled: “It felt weird. I was thinking something else and then when he proposed I started crying.

“I didn’t know how to react. I said yes in the midst of tears, it was very romantic.”

The Venezuela-born tennis player said their ceremony will be held somewhere close to the beach in Spain and will take place in the coming year.

Her husband-to-be was born in Spain but largely grew up in Finland. He was working for Tom Ford in New York City when he met Muguruza.

The grand slam winner said: “He’s a mix, like me. I’m half-Venezuelan and half-Spanish, so we understand each other.

“We share that feeling of being citizens of the world.”

Muguruza won the 2016 French Open and also won the Tour Finals in 2021.

She is currently ranked 132 in singles by the WTA, having last played in January, telling fans in April she was taking a hiatus from tennis until the European summer.
