Hyderabad, Oct 12 (IANS) Telangana’s Shri Ram Sagar Project Phase-II (SRSP-II) will be named after former minister and senior Congress leader Ramareddy Damodar Reddy, who died earlier this month, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said on Sunday.
He made this announcement at the 10th day celebration of Damodar Reddy held at Tungaturthi in Suryapet district.
Saying that the Godavari river is flowing in the combined Nalgonda district thanks to the efforts of Ramareddy Damodar Reddy (RDR), Revanth Reddy said changing the name of SRSP-II to RDR would be the best tribute to the late leader.
The Chief Minister also announced that a Government Order (GO) will be issued in this regard within 24 hours.
Damodar Reddy died on 1 October in Hyderabad. He was 73 years old.
Five-time MLA Damodar Reddy represented Tungaturthy constituency four times and moved to the neighboring Suryapet assembly seat after delimitation. He served as the Minister for Information Technology in the YS Rajasekhara Reddy-led Congress government in undivided Andhra Pradesh (2004–09).
Paying tribute to Damodar Reddy, Revanth Reddy said he fought the then Chandrababu Naidu government to get SRSP-II approved.
The Chief Minister said that the former minister spent all his wealth in public life for the party and workers.
He said Damodar Reddy, who was a five-time MLA and also a minister, sacrificed thousands of acres of inherited land in Khammam and Nalgonda districts. He stood by the workers when they were attacked due to political vendetta.
“He kept the Congress flag high in Nalgonda district and remained with the party till his last breath,” he said.
The CM reminded that Damodar Reddy had fought to bring Godavari water to fluoride affected areas of Nalgonda.
He said Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have condoled the demise of Ramareddy Damodar Reddy. Rahul Gandhi himself expressed his condolences by writing a letter to his son Sarvotham.
Sonia Gandhi also said that the high command will stand with her family.
The Chief Minister promised that Damodar Reddy’s family would be given a political opportunity.
CM Revanth Reddy reached Tungaturthi by helicopter from Hyderabad. He was also accompanied by ministers Uttam Kumar Reddy and Komatireddy Venkata Reddy and MP Raghuveer Reddy.
