Hyderabad, October 20 (IANS) Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) B. Shivadhar Reddy on Monday said the police department is completely committed to maintaining law and order in the state and strict action will be taken against criminals, no matter how hardened they are.
The DGP made this statement after Sheikh Riaz, who had stabbed a police constable to death four days ago, was shot by the police when he tried to escape from a hospital in Nizamabad city.
The police chief said that the hardened criminal snatched weapons from the police personnel on duty and tried to open fire. He died as police tried to stop him, the state police chief said in a statement.
The incident took place on Monday at the Government General Hospital in Nizamabad, where Riyaz was undergoing treatment.
On the night of October 17, Riyaz had stabbed a constable to death after being caught in a bike theft case in Nizamabad.
Constable Empalli Pramod Kumar, 42, went to arrest Riyaz along with his nephew. Pramod was riding the bike while his nephew was sitting behind and the accused was made to sit between them.
The 24 year old accused suddenly attacked Pramod with a knife. When his nephew tried to stop him, the accused stabbed him too. Two of Riyaz’s associates came on a bike and took him away. Although a sub-inspector tried to stop them, they attacked him too.
Injured Pramod was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His nephew was undergoing treatment.
DGP paid tribute to police constable Pramod Kumar on Monday.
He said the government and the police department will stand with Praneeta, who lost her husband Pramod, and her three sons, who lost their father and their family at a very young age.
The police chief announced that the police department will provide an ex-gratia amount of Rs 1 crore, the last paid salary till the retirement of the martyred constable, as well as a government job to one family member. The family will be allotted 300 yards of house site along with Rs. An ex-gratia amount of Rs 16 lakh from the Police Security Welfare Fund and Rs. Ex-gratia amount of Rs 8 lakh from Police Welfare Fund.
“On behalf of the Telangana State Police Department, I pay my tribute to those who lost their lives in the line of duty,” the DGP said.
Riyaz, who was running away after killing the constable, was arrested on Sunday. He was caught by a police team with the help of a civilian Asif near Sarangapur under the limits of Nizamabad Town 6 police station.
Nizamabad Police Commissioner had said that the accused has been captured alive. He denied that any encounter had taken place.
The officer clarified that there is no truth in the news circulated on social media that the police opened fire on Riyaz.
A police team had reached Sarangapur following a tip-off that Riyaz was hiding in a shed there. Seeing the police he tried to run away. However, a person named Asif present nearby tried to catch him.
Riyaz tried to attack Asif with a knife. The police team was successful in surrounding and capturing Riyaz. Both Riyaz and Asif sustained injuries in the scuffle and were taken to hospital for treatment.
Critically injured Asif was later shifted to a hospital in Hyderabad.
