Hyderabad, Oct 28 (IANS) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday directed irrigation department officials to make creative plans to repair the Medigadda, Sundila and Annaram barrages, which are part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project constructed by the previous BRS government.
He also directed officials to ensure that the contract agencies are held responsible for the damage caused to the three barrages.
He asked the irrigation officials to prepare a plan to bring 80 tmcft of water from Tummidihatti to Sundila and also finalize the estimate for repairing the Sundila barrage.
The barrage is being repaired to bring water to the Sripada Yellampalli project.
In the high-level review of irrigation projects, the Chief Minister took information from the officials about the damage caused to Sundila Barrage.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), top officials were also ordered to prepare a plan for irrigation and drinking water supply in the erstwhile Adilabad district. The Chief Minister emphasized that the estimate should be prepared keeping in mind the old works.
Reviewing the contents of the letter recently sent by Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil to the state government, CM Revanth Reddy made several suggestions, including preparation of project-wise status analysis report.
The CM said that he will hold another review meeting in the second week of November on the next steps being taken on the basis of the complete project-wise report.
The Union Minister in his letter highlighted that the progress on Comprehensive Dam Safety Assessment (CDSE) in Telangana is negligible.
Under the Dam Safety Act, 2021, all specified dams have to undergo CDSE by December 2026, yet TG (Telangana) has made little progress despite operationalizing 173 specified dams.
Medigadda, Sundila and Annaram barrages are part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project constructed by the previous BRS government.
After the Congress came to power, it ordered an inquiry into alleged irregularities in the project. After the PC Ghosh Commission submitted its report, the state government decided to hand over the case to the CBI.
The National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) had also investigated the damage caused to the three barrages and confirmed structural collapse due to defects in their design, construction and management.
