Hyderabad, November 19 (IANS) Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday began the distribution of one crore sarees to one crore women.
Launching the Indiramma saree distribution on the occasion of the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, she said the ‘people’s government’ has started the program as part of women empowerment in the state.
Sarees will be distributed to eligible women in two phases.
In the first phase, all the women of the villages will get sarees, which is targeted to be completed by December 9. In the second phase, sarees will be distributed to women in urban areas from March 1 to March 8 on International Women’s Day. 65 lakh sarees will be distributed in the second phase.
CM Revanth Reddy appealed to women ministers and MLAs in his cabinet to wear Indiramma sarees and become brand ambassadors. The Chief Minister emphasized that every woman MLA should wear Indiramma saree and demonstrate the self-respect of the women community.
Saying that the government has launched several women empowerment schemes taking inspiration from Indira Gandhi, the Chief Minister said that women groups are encouraged to open petrol pump outlets.
Women self-help groups have leased 1000 buses to the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC). Indiramma houses have been allotted in the name of women.
The government is also giving priority to women empowerment in politics and has set a target of promoting one crore women as millionaires.
Recalling the “manly services” rendered by Indira Gandhi to the country, CM Revanth Reddy said she had taken the lead when the country was facing a political vacuum.
He said Indira Gandhi worked hard to fulfill the aspirations of BR Ambedkar and also played an important role in nationalization of banks, Agricultural Land Ceiling Act, distribution of land to the poor and construction of houses for the poor.
