Telangana BJP president N Ramachander Rao on Tuesday, January 13 criticized Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s proposal to introduce an auto-debit system for traffic fines, alleging that the move will compromise citizens’ privacy and terming it as “hypocrisy” of the Congress party, ANI reported.
Reacting to the Chief Minister’s remarks on strict enforcement of traffic rules, Rao said the BJP does not support violation of traffic rules, but the proposed mechanism raises serious concerns. “BJP does not approve of any lapse in fines or traffic rule violations. However, the Telangana CM has said that those who violate traffic rules, their accounts will automatically be synchronized with the RTI department and their fines will be deducted,” Rao was quoted as saying by ANI.
He alleged that the proposal amounts to digital surveillance and violation of personal privacy. Making a comparison, Rao said the Congress party had earlier opposed the Centre’s Sanchar Sathi initiative, claiming it would invade the privacy of citizens. He said, “What they had opposed earlier, they are now implementing. Our accounts, our privacy and our financial condition will definitely be compromised.”

Meanwhile, earlier CM Reddy had called for removing exemption in traffic fines in drunk driving cases and urged strict action against traffic rule violators. He said that police officers have been instructed not to give any relaxation to persons issued challan for traffic violations.
The Chief Minister further said that vehicles should be linked to their owners at the time of registration and proposed to introduce an auto-debit system, under which the fine amount in case of traffic violation will be deducted directly from the bank account of the vehicle owner.
