Hyderabad, October 13 (IANS) Ten nominations were filed on the first day on Monday for the by-election to be held on November 11 for Jubilee Hills assembly constituency in Hyderabad.
Returning officer P. Sairam said that a total of 11 sets of nominations were received.
Two candidates from small parties were among those who filed nomination papers.
The rest are independent.
Telangana Rashtra Punahnirman Samiti and Aravapalli Srinivasa Rao of Navataram Party filed their nomination papers.
No one filed nomination from national or regional parties on the first day.
The process of by-election has started with the issuing of notification by the Returning Officer on Monday.
Candidates can file their nomination till 21st October.
Scrutiny of nominations will take place on October 22 and candidatures can be withdrawn till October 24.
Voting will take place on November 11 while counting of votes will take place on November 14.
Election Commission of India has issued guidelines for filing nomination.
Hyderabad District Election Officer RV Karnan said that nominations will not be received on public holidays.
The by-election has been necessitated by the death of sitting BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath in June.
In the 2023 assembly elections, Gopinath scored a hat-trick by defeating former Indian cricket captain and Congress candidate Mohammad Azharuddin by 16,337 votes.
In the multi-cornered contest, Gopinath got 80,549 votes, while Azharuddin got 64,212 votes.
BJP’s L. Deepak Reddy stood third with 25,866 votes.
Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) had also fielded its candidate, but he finished fourth with just 7,848 votes.
BRS has declared Gopinath’s wife Maganti Sunita as its candidate.
Congress has made Naveen Yadav its candidate.
BJP may announce its candidate in a day or two.
As per the final voter list published recently, the constituency has 3,99,000 voters – 2,07,382 men, 1,91,593 women and 25 third gender voters.
In the 2023 assembly elections, the constituency had 3,85,287. Thus there has been an increase of 3.49 percent votes.
Voting for the by-election will be held at 407 polling stations at 139 locations in the constituency.
