Chennai, Nov 23 (IANS) The body of Indian Air Force pilot Wing Commander Naman Syal, who was killed in the tragic Tejas fighter plane crash during the Dubai International Air Show, was brought to Sulur Air Force Station in Coimbatore on Sunday, where colleagues and officers paid emotional tributes to him.
Coimbatore District Collector Pawan Kumar and Superintendent of Police Karthikeyan laid floral tributes on behalf of the district administration as the Indian Air Force observed full military honours.
Wing Commander Sayal, 37, hailed from Himachal Pradesh and was serving as a senior officer at Sulur base. He flew a Tejas MK-1 Light Combat Aircraft from Sulur to Dubai for India’s aerobatic display at the prestigious aviation exhibition, which was attended by leading aerospace companies and delegations from across the world.
Sayal served in the Air Force for more than a decade and was widely regarded as a disciplined officer and an exceptional aviator. He lived in Sulur Air Force quarters with his wife – who was an Air Force officer – and their seven-year-old daughter.
While news of the fatal accident devastated the family, colleagues remembered him as a committed professional and a kind father. He was also pursuing advanced studies related to aviation and defense systems as part of his career progression.
After formal tributes in Sulur, the body was taken to his native village in Himachal Pradesh for the last rites.
Senior Indian Air Force officials said a detailed investigation has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the accident.
The tragic loss of Wing Commander Naman Syal has sent a wave of grief across the Air Force community and beyond, as the nation mourns a brave officer who dedicated his life to serve the nation from the skies.
The Indian Air Force was scheduled to conduct several aerial demonstrations showcasing the capabilities of the indigenous Tejas fighter aircraft.
