Arnav Khaire, a first-year BSc student at Kelkar College, Mulund, was traveling in a second class compartment on November 18 after his first class season pass expired. According to ACP Kalyanji Gete, a minor argument allegedly broke out between him and other passengers as he was talking in Hindi.
Jeetendra Khaire, the victim’s father, said, “Due to the crowd, Arnav accidentally bumped into a man and asked a passenger in Hindi to move forward a little.” Arnav told his father that the passengers asked why he was not speaking Marathi and whether he was ashamed of his language.
His father said, “The passenger, along with his five associates, brutally assaulted my son and pelted him with punches.” “I told them I was Marathi, but they still argued and beat me,” Arnav had told him.
Hurt by the incident, Arnav got off the train at Thane station and caught another local train to Mulund. After reaching home, he spoke to his father in the afternoon and said that he was feeling extremely worried. “Papa, I am not feeling well,” she told him.
When Jitendra Khaire returned home in the evening, he found the door locked from inside. Unable to get inside, she sought help from the neighbors to open it, and found Arnav hanging by his dupatta. He was immediately taken to Rukminibai Hospital, where he was declared dead at 9.05 pm.
Arnav’s father has lodged a complaint at Kolsewadi police station in Kalyan East and demanded strict action against those who allegedly harassed his son.
He said, “The fear and mental stress caused by this incident pushed him towards suicide. I want a full investigation and justice for my son.”
Kolsewadi police have registered a case of accidental death and said the investigation is currently underway.
