A newly married couple had to attend their reception virtually after their scheduled IndiGo flight got cancelled. Guests gathered at the venue in Hubli, Karnataka and were eager to meet the couple.

Medha Kshirsagar from Hubli and Sangma Das from Bhubaneswar, Odisha are software engineers and work in Bengaluru.

They were among thousands of passengers who struggled to reach their destinations after hundreds of IndiGo flights to and from several cities in the country were cancelled.

Their wedding took place in Bhubaneswar on November 23 and they were supposed to attend a reception at Gujarat Bhawan in Hubli, but they could not travel to the city due to widespread IndiGo flight cancellations. A formal reception was reportedly planned in the bride’s hometown on Wednesday.

The couple booked flights from Bhubaneswar to Bengaluru and then to Hubli for December 2, but repeated delays and eventual cancellation on December 3 made it impossible for them to attend the reception in person.

With guests already gathered and preparations underway, the bride’s parents decided to hold the reception online, with the couple joining via video conferencing. In the viral photos and videos, the two are seen fully dressed in traditional attire and sitting in their rooms to attend the occasion on the big screen.

As soon as the incident went viral, many users reacted to it.

One user wrote, “If you think your day is not going well, consider this techie couple who attended their wedding reception online; while 600 guests were waiting for them at the venue.”

“What a time it is – I attended my wedding from the airport lounge,” another added.

One person posted, “Thanks to #IndiGo, India witnessed the first WFH wedding reception for a newlywed couple.”

IndiGo is facing significant disruptions across India, with more than 500 flights canceled on Thursday, the most in a single day in its 20-year history.

On Friday, the airline apologized to all its passengers for the inconvenience and assured that they will provide full waiver on all cancellations and rescheduling requests till December 15.

In a detailed statement on Twitter, IndiGo said, “To each of our customers – we are truly sorry and we will take care. We deeply apologize and understand how difficult the last few days have been for many of you. While this will not be resolved overnight, we assure you that we will do everything in our power to support you in the meantime and get our operations back to normal as soon as possible.”
